Volunteer with Us

Volunteering at Paradise Green

Our volunteers are what makes Paradise Green the heart and soul of the Fringe. With both the company and venues run entirely by volunteers, we are determined to do volunteering the right way. Our volunteering offer is comprehensive to support you to volunteer with us and make the Fringe accessible. Each year, our team is made up from returning volunteers (some who have joined us for decades!) and people joining us for the first time; they bring a variety of skills with them to fulfil the broad range of roles available. By joining us at Paradise Green, you will be key to making our venues the vibrant, welcoming places they are renowned for, for audience members and performers alike.

Volunteering with Us

During our running weeks (weeks 1-3) when our venues are open to the public, there will be two shifts per day. Shift times depend on the programme of shows for the year. Day shifts will usually be around 9:00am to 5:30pm and evening shifts will usually be around 5:00pm to 1:30am. You will get at least one day off per running week and will work a mixture of day and evening shifts.

During our build and break weeks (0 and 4), everyone works together on the same shift, with shift lengths varying depending upon the progress made but never exceeding 12 hours with regular breaks.

You can undertake a variety of roles whilst volunteering at Paradise Green, from front of house and technical to running our social media and providing support to performers as well as management. The variety of roles and mix of day and evening shifts allow you to experience different sides of Paradise Green throughout your time with us.

What We Provide

Our comprehensive offer to our volunteers is at the heart of our ethos for running a great Fringe venue.

Accommodation

As a Paradise Green volunteer, your accommodation is covered! We arrange shared rented flats for all volunteers, usually in the Marchmont area; about a 15 to 20-minute walk from the venues across the Meadows. Most rooms are shared, but we'll do our best to house couples together in a double room and place friends in the same flat where possible.

On arrival nights, you might need to spend a night in a hostel or on a sofa with a sleeping bag. We'll provide all bedding, including sleeping bags, but please bring your own towel. Basic flat essentials like toilet paper and cleaning supplies will be provided.

Training

We offer a comprehensive training programme for our volunteers. Some of this will be provided through an online platform before arriving in Edinburgh (across June and July), some on arrival day, and some through learning on the job. Those undertaking management or technical roles will also be invited to attend in-person training before the start of the Fringe (usually during the first half of July), usually in Manchester. Paradise Green may also pay for you to attend training (such as Food Hygiene or First Aid certificate courses) before you come to Edinburgh, based on our needs and your stated interests.

Food

Each flat is stocked with breakfast essentials like cereals, bread, and juice to start your day right. While you're volunteering, you'll also get free hot and cold meals from the Paradise Green kitchen, plus unlimited tea, coffee, juice and snacks throughout the day.

Tickets for Shows

As part of our reciprocal ticket scheme, we offer our volunteers and performers free standby tickets to our non-sold out shows. If there are seats available, tickets are released on a first-come, first-served basis about five minutes before each show starts. We also partner with other venues so that our volunteers can access standby tickets for a wider range of shows, a great way to experience the Fringe.

Uniform

All new volunteers will be provided with three Paradise Green branded t-shirts to be worn on shifts. Volunteers returning to us will receive an additional t-shirt to top up their collection each year. We also have branded hoodies within the venues to wear if it's getting a bit chilly - which can happen at all times of year in Edinburgh!

What else to consider?

Travel

Volunteers are responsible for arranging and paying for their own travel to and from Edinburgh. There is limited car parking available and the majority of the centre of Edinburgh is for permit holders only. We strongly recommend travelling to Edinburgh via public transport and we recommend booking this as early as possible.

Right to work

Everyone who volunteers with us must prove they have a right to work in the UK for the duration of the time they volunteer with us at the Fringe. Information about how to prove this can be found on the UK Government website. Unfortunately, we are not able to sponsor anyone seeking to obtain a visa.
